How to Embrace Busy as a Softball Player

“Sorry, I didn’t do this because I was too busy!” “This week was sooo busy!”Busy seems to be the catch all excuse for when we didn’t get something done, I GET IT. I do it, too! But when does it not seem busy? Even on Holiday break or on a week off, it still seems to get busy with other things, doesn’t it?

Tips for Playing Softball:

For all my girls out there that are considering collegiate softball, I want to forewarn you that it only gets busier, with the addition of new responsibilities. I don’t say that to scare you. I say that to motivate you to start embracing the busy right now.

Softball lifestyle during the year, while embracing the busy

From softball practice to softball lessons, to studying for school, and managing to find some time to eat and sleep, it’s A LOT! In order to be in the top 7 percent of athletes that play a college sport we have to be able to do A LOT better, more efficiently and intentionally!

Let’s talk how embracing the busy will benefit softball players

BUSY IS NO LONGER A WORD USED TO DESCRIBE THINGS

Overall, being busy has a negative connotation to it. When you say “I am so busy” or “I have so much to do right now, my schedule is so busy,” these statements feel like you have to rather than you get to. So, stop using “busy” as your crutch. Busy is no longer an excuse.

PRIORITIZE TOP ROLES

Think about your goals in life and the roles you dream and wish to play. How can you make those a reality? How can you prioritize them so that they are your first thought? For example, I set time aside everyday to work through my GROW journal. This helps me prioritize my goals, aspirations, and focus on my daily intentions. Making sure that your initial energy everyday is devote to these things is so important.

PLAN IT OUT

Ever get so stressed about upcoming assignments or tasks, write them all down on one sheet of paper and then think to yourself “How am I going to get all of this done?” Spending the time to block out your schedule for weekly schedule view will have you focusing on the details of each task so that you are your very best for each and every role.

ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS

You know one of the biggest distractions many people face today is? THE PHONE. The instant gratification of getting a notification, or seeing your phone light up because someone texted you back can lead to distractions, when there is something else that is more important to your long term goals and top roles are. When you are working towards something great, put your phone away. If you let distractions in, I will guarantee they will win. (If you are 99% in you are 100% out).

FOCUS AND APPRECIATE

Focus on what you do have rather than what you don’t have yet. Appreciate the resources and the fuel that keeps you going each and every day. With enough hard work, it will all pay off. I promise! All of these steps will help you with the mental toughness in softball and turning Busy into action.

You can no longer use the Busy as an excuse

Now that we know how, in order for any of these uncomfortable adjustments to stick you have to be rooted in your why! Some Softball players know what they want, some know how they are going to get there, and very few of us know why we want it. The why is the secret sauce that pushes you to get in those workouts, to exceed standards in school, and go the extra mile in everything you do.
